



To sufficiently grasp the topic, the class shall explore the: diplomatic background to the launch of hostilities imperial goals of the respective engaged powers military imperatives driving battle outcomes personal experiences of affected combatants and civilians legacies of the negotiated settlements which defined the end of hostilities and evolving historiography of the conflict. Course Description: This seminar examines the history and multiple legacies of World War I on the region widely referred to as the “Middle East.” Widely considered the transformative set of events which established the template for the past century’s regional politics, this conflict is absolutely essential to understanding the modern Middle East.
